ABOUT AMC10/12

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is an exam with a long history organized by the American Mathematical Association of America (MAA) since 1950. The AMC exams are divided into blocks. Grades 8, 10 and 12. The AMC10 exam is open to 9th graders, 10th graders and high achieving AMC8 students are invited to participate. The AMC12 exam is for students in grades 11 and 12.

The AMC10/12 exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and takes 75 minutes to complete, built by the American Mathematical Association from the Math questions of the Middle School program high school. The main purpose of the exam is to give participants the opportunity to become acquainted with the in-depth forms of mathematics in the general education curriculum, with many questions related to practical applications of mathematics. From that approach, the exam aims to promote students' interest, passion and positive learning attitude not only in the field of Mathematics.

EXAM STRUCTURE   

The test is given in a multiple-choice format compiled by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and provided in English for all countries. BTC in Vietnam will translate the exam questions into Vietnamese. Participants will be provided with a bilingual test in English and Vietnamese).     
Field of knowledge: 
AMC10: School mathematics till 10th grade including Algebra; Geometry (Pitagon's Theorem, formulas for area and volume); Probability. 
AMC12: High school mathematics including the above subjects along with Trigonometry; Advanced Algebra; Advanced Geometry; but Calculus is not included.
* Marking: Each correct answer receives 6 points. Each left blank answer receives 1.5 points and each incorrect answer receives 0 point. The maximum score is 150 points.
* Participants are not allowed to use calculators when taking the exam
* Participants fill out the information and answer the questions on the answer sheet with a pencil.

TIME AND LOCATION

Exam location: There will be exam boards nationwide (Participants will be announced about the location 10 days before the exam takes place). In case it is not possible to organize the offline exam, the exam will take place online at website amcvietnam.edu.vn and be supervised via Zoom Cloud Meetings.

Exam Result: The exams will be sent to the Mathematical Association of America for assessment and review. Test scores will be announced 30 days after the competition date. Results will be announced 1-3 months after the competition date.

INVITATIONAL COMPETITION

AMC’S INVITATIONAL COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCORING AMC 10/12 PARTICIPANTS - AIME 

Students with exceptionally excellent results in the AMC 10/12 exam will be invited to participate in the AMC series of exams, which is the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination). The AMC American Mathematical Exam - AIME is a challenging competition for those who excel in the AMC 10 and/or AMC 12 exams.

The AIME is a 15-question, 3-hour exam and each answer answered is an integer between 0 and 999. The questions in AIME are much more difficult than in AMC 10 and AMC 12. Criteria for being invited to AIME vary according to the results of the AMC10/12 exam. For AMC 10, at least 2.5% of participants with the highest score will be invited. For AMC 12, the number is at least 5% of the participants with the highest score. The exact number will depend on the difficulty of each exam.
